What is Wastewater?

The Wastewater Treatment Process

1. Screening: Large debris and solids are removed from the wastewater through screens or grates.

2. Primary Treatment: In this phase, larger suspended solids settle to the bottom of the treatment tank, forming sludge, while oils and greases float to the surface and are skimmed off.

3. Secondary Treatment: Biological processes are used to break down organic matter in the wastewater. Microorganisms feed on the organic material, converting it into harmless substances.

4. Tertiary Treatment: This additional step is used when higher-quality treated water is required. It may involve advanced filtration, chemical treatment, or other processes to further purify the water.

5. Disinfection: To ensure the removal of harmful pathogens, the treated water is disinfected with chemicals like chlorine or ultraviolet (UV) light.

6. Sludge Management: The sludge generated during the treatment process is treated and disposed of separately. It can be converted into biosolids for use in agriculture or disposed of in a controlled manner.
